Learning Waves Skillnet, as part of its JSSP programme in 2012, developed the HETAC Level 6 Certificate in Radio Programme Production in collaboration with Institute of Technology (IT) Tralee. The course was designed to give participants the knowledge and practical skills to put them in a position where they could potentially gain employment in the radio sector. Two years on, Learning Waves Skillnet has tracked the progress of a student who took part in the 2012 course.
Positive2Work Skillnet, in partnership with Tesco Ireland and the Department of Social Protection (DSP), ran a pilot of the Advantage Programme, a six week programme for job-seekers with the opportunity to upskill by achieving four FETAC Level 4 modules in retail skills, along with a work placement with Tesco Ireland. The key aim of the programme is to give job-seekers an immediate edge when it comes to job opportunities in the retail sector, by providing highly practical and relevant transferable experience.
Hewlett Packard (HP) Galway has found the Job-seekers Support Programme (JSSP) a rich source for skilled professionals looking to cross skill into IT and Software Engineering. Many of the programme graduates have taken fulltime positions with HP.
I would encourage anyone who is interested in working in radio to attend the training courses the network has on offer and to benefit from meeting people from the industry. Gaining some work experience and following up on contacts made on the courses is an important next step.
I honestly believe that none of these wonderful experiences would have happened had I not been on the Coaching Skills course and I know that had this course not been run free of charge by Waterford Chamber Skillnet for unemployed people, I would never have taken part.
