Entry Requirements This course is particularly well suited to learners who are:

working in the RAC sector with no previous training on RAC fundamentals, e.g., sales and support staff, new employees,
technical staff with other trade backgrounds or disciplines,
considering further education (e.g., an apprenticeship) or a career in the RAC sector,
responsible for the purchasing or operation of refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump systems.

Course Content This course assumes no previous knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

It will give learners a basic - but solid - understanding of the fundamentals of refrigeration, the main system types and components, the range of applications, including air conditioning and heat pumps, the use of controls, and the key provisions and impact of recent legislation on the sector.

Methods of Assessment Theory and Practical
Learning Outcomes • Identify basic terms, principles, units, theory and thermodynamics of vapour compression cycles and refrigerants.
• Identify the causes and effects of global warming and climate change.
• Identify causes and effects of ozone depletion.
• Identify stationary refrigerant, air conditioning and heat-pump system components, functions and leakage risk.
• Identify the hazards and safe working practices for the installation, commissioning and handling of refrigerants.
• Fabricate, braze and examine pipework.
• Undertake pressure testing, evacuation and record completion.
• Undertake refrigerant charging, leak checking and record keeping.
• Recovery and disposal preparation of refrigerant and oil.

Course Content The aim of this course is to provide the experienced engineer with the knowledge, skills and certification to work on the installation, service, maintenance, recovery and leak checking of stationary refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump equipment that contains refrigerants classified as either fluorinated gasses (F-Gas) or Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)

Entry Requirements Higher Certificate (Level 6) in a relevant science discipline at Merit Level or equivalent.

Applicants with other qualifications and / or with relevant experience will also be considered. It is also envisaged however, that applicants with different backgrounds can successfully complete the programme, subject to assessment of other recognised qualifications, and / or recognised prior learning and / or relevant work experience. These candidates will be interviewed for suitability and be subject to prior approval by the Programme Board.

Course Content Many organisations develop a management plan or system to implement, manage and maintain environmental goals. This ordinary degree in Environmental Management is specifically designed for people who are required to take an active part in the environmental management affairs of an organisation.

It is also suitable for others who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and competence base in the science of environmental management.

Financial Support This course has been approved by ULearning Skillnet for a fees subsidy of up to 20% for students whose company is a member of the ULearning Skillnet Network. There are also free places available for students who are unemployed and meet the required criteria by ULearning Skillnet.
Enrolment and Start Dates Comment 2 Year Course enrolment in September. The closing date for completed applications is 1st September each year (unless otherwise stated on the web page for a particular course). Late applications may be accepted beyond this date up to 14th September depending on availability. Courses are filled on a first come first served basis.
